PHYSICAL SYMBOL OF INSIDERS

To help spread your message even more, it’s ideal to even create some sort of symbol that can be what I call a “conversation crutch.” It’s something that provides a reason for your converted to talk you up. For example, I have a pair of cuff links shaped like the Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo, and I’m always excited to talk about the commercialization of space when someone mentions the cuff links. (I’m actually really bummed because I lost my cuff links at a recent black-tie event. Ugh! So if you got cooler ones, send them my way.)

One of the best examples of a physical symbol is the yellow Livestrong bracelets that appeared on everyone’s wrists following their release. This was a simple thing that created massive awareness and an avalanche of imitators. More recently, I really like the symbol from Falling Whistles (Fallingwhistles.com). They have a mission to stop the war in the Congo and the exploitation of children who are too young to fight but are enlisted into the violence with nothing more than a whistle to blow. Supporters wear an actual whistle around their necks, and it’s a great conversation piece that opens up the dialogue about the charity.
