MEET THE MATHEMATICIAN MARY EVEREST BOOLE

Mary Everest Boole (1832–1916, England) was the inventor of curve stitching. She taught herself calculus using her father’s books, and learned more by corresponding with famous mathematicians. She started her career as a librarian and then became a teacher of math and science. Her hands-on methods, encouragement of critical thinking, and careful use of repetition still influence classrooms today.
