Chapter Fifteen

V

Heather was quiet as she drove away from my parents’ house. Understandably so, I supposed. Meeting my parents was not supposed to go quite like that, but what else could I have expected? My father didn’t respect me. He’d made that clear time and time again. I wiped at my eyes as subtly as I could. I didn’t want Heather to see me crying over them. My father had made his position pretty damned clear. I didn’t need to shed a tear for him finally deciding to show his true colors.

I don’t know why I kept thinking that he’d change his mind, maybe. He had seemed interested back when I came out to him, so many years ago. Seemed receptive to my being nonbinary. To the fact that I didn’t like men in that way. But over the years, it was like he’d decided to conveniently forget everything that I had said. Like he figured that it was just a phase, and he could tell me when the phase ended and then expect me to do what he thought was best for the pack.

I tried to contain my scorn, but failed. The scoffing sound I made earned a quick glance from Heather. I shook my head, wanting to keep my thoughts to myself as she drove. It’d be way too distracting for both of us if I spilled my feelings about what had taken place. I didn’t need us getting in an accident.

And it wouldn’t be fair to put all of this on her. She’d had no idea what she was getting into when she mated with me. Hell, she hadn’t completely agreed to do that. Our wolves took care of that part for us. Talk about an awkward wake-up call. It couldn’t be easy getting thrust into this kind of pack drama all of a sudden.

And yet she had tried to stand up for me to my dad. No one but my mother had ever done something like that before. Even in the face of his insults—I mean, come on. Strumpet?—and his bullshit, she stood up for me and tried to make him understand why we were so against his crap. Every time Heather surprised me like this, I looked at her in a new light. I knew my wolf was already predisposed to like her since we were true mates and all, but each time I thought I knew her as a human, she surprised the hell out of me and I found something else about her that I…well, that I didn’t want to live without. She was so damned strong when she wanted to be, when she saw someone else being hurt. She gave me hope that maybe I wasn’t stupidly jousting at windmills when I said that werewolf culture needed to change. Someone willing to stand up to the Alpha was the kind of partner I would have looked for in the first place. And here she was, falling right into my lap.

My father wasn’t going to take this lying down, though.
