Chapter 10
âMrs. Bennet was asking about you again today,â Bingley said as he slipped into a chair in the library at Netherfield. âApparently, missing one day of calling to go shooting is understandable, but missing two is not.â He chuckled.
âDid you tell her that my cousin has come to visit?â Darcy glanced up quickly from the book he was reading.
Bingley nodded. âShe was shocked that you have not introduced him to her, but do not worry, Miss Mary took up your cause and told her mother that would be very unusual. And then, Mrs. Bennet excused herself to locate her husband. I should think we will be getting a call from the gentleman before long.â
âAnd how much about who I am did you tell Mrs. Bennet?â Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam asked.
âOnly as much as she asked,â Bingley replied with a smirk.
âIn other words,â Darcy said dryly, âshe knows everything any mother of unwed daughters wishes to know.â
Bingley shook his head. âLikely more than that.â
âExactly what did you tell her?â Richard demanded.
âI only shared with her the standard items of importanceâ you are the second son of an earl, colonel in the regulars, not on the continent at present but had been, have a smallish inheritance, hazel eyes, sandy hair, and approximately my height but broader, thirty-one years of age, unwed, no appearance of being wed any time soon, looking for an heiress, and more of a brother to Darcy than a cousin along with being co-guardian of Darcyâs sister.â
âIs that all?â Richard shook his head and frowned.
Bingleyâs brow furrowed as he thought. âNo, no,â he finally said. âThat is not all. She also knows that you enjoy music, dancing, and reading.â He settled into his chair but then popped forward. âAnd that you do not expect to be in the area for long.â
âDid you also tell her that I am not looking for a wife?â
âOf course, but, according to Mrs. Bennet, no gentleman knows he is looking for a wife until he has found one.â
Darcy chuckled. âThat sounds a great deal like your mother, Richard.â
âIndeed, it does. Female logic, if it may be called that, is somewhat lacking in understanding the view of a manâs desire to marry.â
âHow so?â Bingley asked.
âA gentleman knows when he is ready to marry, and then, he sets about finding a wife. It is not as if we are surprised by the notion.â
âI was not looking for a wife when I took Netherfield, but I believe I have found one,â Bingley countered.
âYou have been looking for a wife since you began noticing girls were pretty,â Darcy said.
âNot so,â Bingley corrected. âI have been looking for what I wish for in a wife. I have not been looking for a wife. The two are very different. It would be very odd if I had been looking for a wife while still a child, do you not think? For I cannot remember a time when I did not notice that girls are pretty.â
âThis is why Mrs. Bennet could
