Chapter 13
Adric
He was a fucking bastard⦠and he was hiding like a goddamn pussy in his brotherâs room. Lazar shot him another questioning look.
âI donât fucking get it,â his brother said as he found an unoccupied chair and lowered his tall-framed bulk into it. âJust tell her already.â
His muscles overwhelmed the fragile bench, sending shards of it across the room as it bent under his solid weight. Lazar stood again, knocking the seat over in frustration. Adric grinned as his blond-haired brother cursed Rohan for yet another prank.
âYouâd think heâd get tired of this shit,â Laz complained, finding another place to sit, this time on the couch beside Paavola. She scooted to the far side, as neither of them liked the other. âIâm just going to throw the damned thing back into his room.â
Paavola offered a suggestion, her soft voice a deception. Adric knew her well, and that coy façade was just that: a mask. âIf you react, you know heâs going to keep doing it,â she said. âKeep the chair. Use it, even. Doesnât matter how, you huge fool. Donât let him get away with his stupid games. Heck, it could even hold some of this mess you throw all across the room,â she said, wrinkling her nose at the destruction that Laz constantly left in his wake. âDo that, and then see how he reacts.â
Laz turned to her, his voice cold. He was interested in what she said, but knowing his brother, would never admit it. She was right; he could be a huge foolâand definitely was a deliberate messâmore often than not. No one had more fucking pride than Lazar, not even him.
âNo one asked for your opinion,â his brother answered.
She shrugged. Crossing her legs delicately, she spoke to Adric, ignoring Lazar. His brother never acted normal when she was around. But then again, neither did she. They were like two children battling it out for the largest portion of pie. Both wanted it. Both would lie, fight, and connive to get it. For those that knew them well, the most intriguing mix of their hate-dynamic was that in the end, they cooperated beautifully when it came to the important things. Adric and Rohan both could count on them to always follow through and to do the right thing for the greater cause. Shame that together they never stood a chance for any sort of friendship.
âThen thereâs the real issue at hand. The one that interests me, as a female thatâs somehow entangled myself back up into your treachery,â Paavola said. She flicked at her nails, feigned boredom in her gestures but glee in her hazel eyes at the pestering she was about to subject him to. âDo you really think your little playmateâs been intimate with Ro? I mean, even after heâs been moping around complaining of his balls being ready to fall off from lack of use?â she asked him, winningly bland. âReally, Adric? Are you that prideful?â
Yes. Yes, he really fucking was.
Paavola was fortunate he cared for her.
