Another important democratizing trend we see is from synchronous virtual online meeting platforms like Blackboard Collaborate, WebEx, GoToMeeting, Adobe Connect, Skype, and Google Hangouts. While the technologies will obviously continue to change and improve, the message is clear: anyone can build a learning space anywhere, anytime, and (currently), for free with some of the tools.

As I write this chapter, I am at a small school for the children of leprosy-affected adults in rural India. Yesterday, I watched the schoolchildren perform a choreographed dance version of a South Korean pop song, which after an hour of relatively boring speakers, sent the kids into explosive clapping and cheering (much to the chagrin of their teachers). My wife and several others took videos of this moment, which they have probably already shared through Facebook or YouTube. This morning, I woke up early, and over a 13.5 hour time difference, did a video-based interview with the author of a book on parenting and education, which dozens of people from around the world watched live, and which others will watch as a recorded version.

To claim that these synchronous and near-synchronous technologies will dramatically impact learning does not feel like hyperbole. In fact, it feels like such a moment of importance that it creates a moral imperative to help these students, who face no small amount of discrimination because of their parents’ disease, to become more knowledgeable about building their own learning spaces.
