“I am not going to complain about you coming along,” Aquesam said hours later as he helped her into his carriage before his house. Foonauri held his hand as she stepped inside. As she sat down, she adjusted her skirt. Today she wore a voluminous dress of rose pink that hid the various items she was smuggling into Castle Tier along with the tight-fitting pair pair of wool pants she. She had tucked the cuffs into her heeled boots. She had her pistol strapped to her calf and her war fan in her purse, which also held a pair of grip gloves.

“I really am not,” Count Aquesam said as he followed her in. He wore a saffron-yellow doublet with two rows of green buttons running down his torso. A matching cravat adorned his neck, the tails vanishing beneath his garment. His hose were the same eye-clashing green. “I am just surprised that you’re coming along. You rarely go with me. You’re always so busy in the day.”

“Well, I am taking a break from my other activities,” she said brightly, her voice echoing behind her mask. “I don’t have any training to do today. And you bought me this lovely dress. I just have to wear it and feel beautiful.”

“You do look radiant in it,” he said, his eyes flicking up and down her body. They lingered at her cleavage. A pendant of rose quartz nestled in the valley of her breasts, contrasting with the dusky brown of her skin. “Yes, you do.”

“So, isn’t that reason enough to come with you?” she asked as the groom closed the door. She wore Lady Foonauri’s mask and savored the delight of showing off her new dress and necklace. She felt gorgeous in it, the pink complimenting the cobalt blue of her naqaab.

The fact she could aid the Cracked Gems and protect Pharaj only made this more exhilarating.

“Well, if it was another woman, I would say that was enough. But you are interested in the game far more than normal.”

“I think it will be an exciting game of Suits,” Lady Foonauri said. “So exciting, that I am sure you’ll keep Duke Veygar at the table for the entire game.”

A sly smile crossed Aquesam’s lips. “Oho, this is one of your missions.” He leaned forward. “Are you going to burn down another tower?”

She winked at him.

“Foonauri,” he groaned as he leaned back, a look of such delight on his face, “what a team we shall make when you are my wife. It will be glorious.”

The temptation to accept his proposal grew in her, especially when she was back in her role as Lady Foonauri. He didn’t have a problem with how she spent her time. He didn’t know the specifics, but he had figured out enough to know she was involved with the fire and the “assassination attempt” at the castle. His power and connections made him valuable. He opened so many doors for Lady Foonauri; doors Jade was so eager to exploit.

She wouldn’t find a safer man to marry.
