âHe really helped me to understand about my brother,â Spinel was saying to Foonauri a few hours after sunrise. The Onderian thief held a soother jewelchine to her forehead. âI donât think I slept more than an hour after, but it was true rest.â
Foonauri nodded. âIâm glad.â
âI felt guilty that I mourned him,â Spinel continued. âAfter what he did to you, I felt like I should hate him. That I wasnât a good friend for missing my brother.â
âI felt guilty that I killed him,â Foonauri admitted, the pain aching in her. âThat I stole something positive from your life.â She glanced at Spinel. âAnd itâs okay. I understand. He was your brother. Itâs okay that you miss him. I donât hate you for it.â
Spinel hugged her, the people on the street flowing past them. âI donât hate you, either. I know I said that before, but I do mean it. It was all Utyinâs fault.â
Foonauri nodded her agreement. âIâm glad. I was afraid that you hated me. Deep inside, and you just werenât saying it.â
âMe, too.â Spinel laughed. âIt did linger in the back of my mind. I just couldnât make it go away. I kept expecting you to turn on me.â She tightened her arms around Foonauri. âIâve never had a friend Iâve been this close to, you know.â
âNot Citrine or Quartz?â
âI never knew the real Quartz,â Spinel said. âBut I know the real you.â
âIâm not sure who the real me is,â admitted Foonauri, breaking the hug. âAm I Jade, Lady Foonauri, or even Naunee?â
âYes,â Spinel said. âYouâre all of them. People are too complicated to be just one thing. Thatâs why we drive each other insane. We want everything to be simple, but itâs not. The worldâs this big ball of snarled yarn. Weâre all tangled up and canât get out. It drives us to do stupid things.â She paused. âLike climbing up the sides of castles in broad daylight and the full view of guards with bows.â
Foonauri sighed. âYou are never going to forget I did that.â
âNope!â
Foonauri smiled. âGood. You wouldnât be Spinel if you werenât making a joke out of everything.â
âDo I?â Spinel frowned. âHuh, I guess I do. When Iâm not being a bitch.â
âYour word. I would have used a different one. Like when your slice of meat has a big hunk of gristle in it you have to chew and chew and chew. Thatâs you sometimes.â
Spinel snorted. âYou say the nicest things.â
âI do. Iâm glad you recognize that.â Foonauri glanced ahead at Gray Rock Castle. âWell, shall we be serious?â
The Onderian womanâs expression fell. She adjusted the blonde wig she wore and nodded, her face looking serious. Too serious.
Foonauri almost burst into laughter.
They strode forward in their dresses, borrowed from Heathi. Foonauri wore a sober gray one with a high neckline and a matching winter coat. It was feminine and had a bit of lace at the cuffs. She wore a wide-brimmed hat of a deep crimson pinned to her hair. It was a cold morning, but not nearly as frigid as the mountains.
