Foonauri felt subdued the next day. Spinel’s fractured soul had reflected Foonauri’s own, and she didn’t like it.

She had stared at the last of her dresses and jewels, the things men had given her because she pretended to love them. She had faked it with all her men since Ōbhin. She wondered if she even had faked it with him. With Taim.

I did love those two, right? She grieved for them both. Missed them. Her heart had a hole for each of them. I must have loved them. I can’t be as bad as Spinel.

Only, Foonauri wasn’t sure.

So she threw herself into her training. The Cracked Gems felt so important to her. A new direction. Spinel might not have embraced it, but Foonauri had a chance to change which path she walked down. To do better. She wouldn’t use men.

But I do need an escort to the Feast.

Would she have to trick another man into thinking she loved him to accomplish her mission? Before the previous evening, she wouldn’t have hesitated, now . . . Would she be hurting one man to defend others? The Lost Spear had the potential to devastate. Why else would the Brotherhood want it?
