Linc stood at the threshold of his office adjoining the stables, arms folded in front of him, watching Rachel continue her training and gentling of Summer. The horse was being put through her paces and looked to be enjoying herself. He knew the feeling. Educating Rachel about the blessings and dangers of life in the real world was proving to be easier now that she’d focused more of her attention on capturing the heart of the filly rather than capturing him.

Oh, he still found himself drawn to his wife’s genuine yet unconscious sexiness. And he still allowed himself to indulge in explicit fantasies featuring her in a starring role. Her husky laugh continued to disarm him. She still said goodness gracious endearingly at the most ordinary events of modern-day living.

But Linc found if he concentrated on her less-desirable traits, her loyalty to traditional values and her stubborn desire to remain on the ranch, the conclusion was obvious and inevitable: any kind of relationship between them, sexual or otherwise, would result in heartache for her; consequently, he would feel guilty as hell.

Unfortunately, she just didn’t have the experience to understand. Emotional support was not his style. He didn’t like too many demands on his precious free time, either. Rachel had already proven how time-consuming and argumentative she could be. She was also as obstinate as a mule. To cap it all off she didn’t have a clue about where he was coming from.

In her world, commitments were unquestionable and lifelong. Marriage meant forever. In spite of her agreement to the annulment once she was ready to move to town, Linc knew better than to believe that Rachel would give up her values and beliefs without a fight. In all likelihood Rachel was bound to come up with some reason she needed to stay at the ranch, at least for a little while longer. Then that little while would lead to a longer while, and pretty soon he would find himself trapped.

She did have a way of turning his life upside down. Because of her unpredictability, he might have to come down pretty hard on her to make Rachel understand that despite the fact that he’d become her husband, he really wasn’t good marriage material. The annulment would then be the best option she had left.

But even if he had to throw her off with several more demonstrations of how randy, selfish and off-putting he was capable of being, he wasn’t about to let her think she could expect anything more from him.
