Chapter

Twenty-Two

Senara

It felt like it had been a while since I had a day off, and while one couldn't come quickly enough, only a week had passed since I started as a Royal Guard. It didn't stop the relief that surged through me when my commander told me I had the day and night to myself, and I spent the majority of it sleeping in my room. Now that I'd rested, my thoughts were clearer, and I was ready to spend a full day protecting the castle.

My commander assigned me to patrol around the royal gardens, the irony of which wasn't lost on me. And it would’ve been easy to let Wyn in today, to let her have time with the plants, and then she could’ve gone to her room and made her potion without anyone seeing.

It was a matter of one day. A few hours even.

Even though I only had a limited amount of time to adjust to the day shift, I'd forced myself to return to the spot where I last saw the man fleeing from Wyn and me.

He was tall, built big, and moved with all the grace of a fish out of water, but there were many big, clumsy men in the castle. Unfortunately, I hadn’t been able to make out any more distinct features. His darkly colored cloak with its hood pulled up firmly hid his identity from my sight as I'd chased him around the castle until he just seemed to vanish into thin air. There were no tracks, not a disruption in the soil and the castle floors didn’t give away any secrets of those who passed over them either.

His quick disappearance was so startling that I wondered if he had magical abilities, too. Wouldn't that be hilarious? A Magic Touched spotting another Magic Touched. But then, why run?

I'd been looking for any type of clue that might lead me to where he went. He had seen Wyn using her magic and that could get her killed. I had to ensure that the cloaked individual wouldn't blab to anyone about what he may, or may not have, seen. But first, I had to actually find him, or at least figure out who he was. The task was proving next to impossible.

I spent all of my patrol shift getting more and more agitated since I couldn't figure out how to find the person who saw Wyn. And what made the whole situation even worse was the fact that I was supposed to be protecting her while she mixed her potion. Shame ached in my bones. Poor Wyn trusted me, and I let her down.

To top it all off, if the mysterious person chose to tell others about Wyn, we would both be punished, even though I hadn't actually performed any magic. In fact, the one who reported it may even be punished just for being in the presence of magic.

None of it mattered in the eyes of the King. Anyone involved with magic, anyone who
