I remember feeling stumped with the last question. Describing myself was a tough thing to do, especially when I could only use one word to do so.
âYou have a boyfriend, huh,â Bradley said with a smile.
Ugh. Why did I have to get that question?
Ignoring Bradleyâs teasing, I began sorting through all the profiles, methodically placing them in five rows, one row for each type of questionnaire. I quickly reviewed the surveys of those who had the same set of questions as me. Only one other index card had a boyfriend or girlfriend listed. The rest had answered ânoâ for that question.
âRight, letâs get to it,â Megan said.
The three of us scanned the profiles for several minutes before any of us spoke. Bradley broke the silence by guessing the personâs name on one of the cards: âI think this one is a girl named Ella. I remember speaking to her, and she had a heavy New York accent. She also said that she was training for a marathon.â
The card was in the row containing all the questions that I had, only this card listed âNew Yorkâ as its home state and âfield and trackâ for the question about hobbies and sports.
I didnât get a chance to speak with this Ella, but Megan seemed to vouch for Bradleyâs assumption.
âYes, I do remember her. She did have a heavy accent. I could barely understand her.â
âAnd this one,â Bradley said as he reached across the table, âI believe is someone named Madeline. She indicated that she loved watching old TV shows, so my guess is that sheâs the one whose favorite show is I Love Lucy.â
âWell now, mate, did you happen to interview any males,â Megan asked Bradley in a tone that I couldnât decipherâwas she giving him a hard time, or was she teasing him? I was secretly glad that Megan had verbalized what I was thinking.
Bradley appeared taken back by Meganâs directness. âYes, as a matter of fact, I did. See,â Bradley said, pointing his pencil to his pad. âRight here, Ethan. He has brown hair and um.â Bradley looked carefully at his paper. âI guess thatâs all I wrote down.â
The three of us chuckled, silently at first, until our futile attempts to control our laughter resulted in full-fledged belly laughs. We couldnât help ourselves.
A sea of âShhhsâ filled the air, which only made controlling our laughter harder.
âThis one, I think, is a girl named Amy,â I said in an attempt to get us back on track. âShe had blond hair with green tints to it, as if discolored by chlorine. Iâm guessing that sheâs a swimmer like the person who listed swimming under sports.â
âBrilliant,â Megan responded.
Over the next twenty minutes, we were able to deduce another sixteen questionnaires, give or take a few differences of opinion.
âFive minutes left,â one of the leaders called out.
âWe only have eight left. We can do it, mates,â Megan said. âCheck your notes. Is there anyone that you wrote down that we havenât guessed yet?â
âWe used everyone that I spoke to,â Bradley answered.
