These questions are interesting independently; but in the context they reveal a movement from, and therefore a linkage through, the present (the time of Pou Kaha and the other Pou) to the Trinity. The intermediate steps are of course Mere Rikiriki’s four foundations, and their source, the four apostles. The appearance of these names, spanning centuries and modes of revelation, reveal their ultimate significance for the members of Māramatanga.

These disparate threads came together when the growth of the movement, both in its members and in its centers, and the emergence of new activist leaders, became part of a pattern that began in the 1970s and extended into the decades that followed. The pieces did not always fit. It was not easy, for example, to reconcile the activist stance of youth with the more conservative position taken by some elders. Yet this lack of neatness was not a cause for concern. On the contrary, at rā, and on other occasions when members of the movement met, debates would go on into the early hours of the morning, with individuals exploring diverse perspectives and the group benefiting as the spectrum of possible positions was set out.
