“Nam-joo said you did, like, so well in the meeting.” Sophie dragged Fran by the hand through the dizzying mirrored expanse of her apartment’s atrium or foyer or whatever. The ceiling rose at an angle in eight trapezoidal panels to a central octagon from which a massive chandelier depended, its multicolored lights reflected and re-reflected into a sea of stars. Their reflections skidded through the dazzling gloom.

“That’s nice of her,” Fran said, feeling unaccountably nervous. “I just knew something useful. I heard a friend in town talking about it a few months ago.”

Sophie halted. Fran stopped just short of her as the smaller girl turned back. She was wearing a black zip-front jumpsuit and a plain leather dog collar with a stainless steel ring. Fran wondered where she got her eyeliner and lip gloss and who did her beautiful cornsilk hair. “You should never devalue yourself like that,” she said, her tone deadly serious. “You’re a powerful woman now. You have to own your power. You have to believe in it and not let anyone take advantage of you.”

She broke into a sunny grin, the ear-popping pressure of her stare dissolving like fog. “Come on! Let me show you around!”
