Measurement of Chemosensory Functions in School-age Children

The greatest limitation to determining chemosensory function in children is their cognitive ability to understand the requirements of the test and their ability to maintain attention during the task. Clinical tests for children should (1) require minimal or no training for a child to be able to complete the test successfully; (2) have a low withdrawal rate; (3) be reliable; (4) be suitable for use at the bedside, outpatient clinic, school, or home; and (5) produce data that allow classification of children of different ages as normative, hyposmic/hypogeusic, or anosmic/ageusic.
