BILLY SCRAPED THE food left over on their plates into the sink with such vigor he almost cracked one. He should’ve asked her back up here. They could’ve had more wine, more flirtation. They could’ve recaptured the mood.

He flicked on the garbage disposal and braced his hands against the counter, hunching over the sink. He didn’t want her like that—a box to be checked off.

Their union had to be special, organic, blooming from mutual need. They’d been on the verge of something special, but Bri had interrupted it with her call.

A harsh reminder that they had other business besides their own. He and Mia never would’ve met if his sister hadn’t gotten mixed up with criminals. Maybe that fact marked their relationship as doomed.

He finished cleaning the kitchen and dumped some rice and spicy shrimp in a plastic bowl and stuck it in the microwave. He took the food to his bedroom and settled his back against the pillows as he turned on the TV.

Not quite what he had in mind when he anticipated some spiciness in his bed tonight, but at least he wouldn’t regret this spice. He fanned his mouth as he bit into a chili—or maybe he would.
