It Hosts Our Emotions and Feelings

According to the Center for Addiction and Mental Health, one in five people experience a mental health or addiction problem in their lives. The statistics released regarding cases of mental health, anxiety, and depression show an alarming increase in new diagnoses. We are seeing increased levels of anxiety and depression among all age levels and in all areas of our society, from school children to adults and even senior citizens. You may ask, “Why is there such an increase in anxiety and depression in our culture?”

The mental health epidemic cannot be easily explained; however, by considering the function of our unconscious mind, we may gain an understanding of why we’re seeing these alarming trends—in anxiety and depression in particular. An awareness of the unconscious mind’s role may also provide possible solutions for such conditions.

We live in a culture that has collectively agreed on rules and ways of being that suggest, “The harder you work, the more successful and valued you will be.” Our culture tends to believe that multitasking is the only efficient approach, the only way to accomplish all we need to get done. Furthermore, our culture has an unspoken, collective belief that the public display of certain emotions is weak and unacceptable. Does any of this sound familiar to you? Has it occurred to you that perhaps we’re living in a time where our intellectual, conscious, decision-making minds are being influenced by a collective, saboteur mentality?

In addition, it seems that many give top priority to their intellectual minds, never truly listening to the unconscious part of who they are. If we buy into the collective saboteur mindset—“The harder we work, the more successful we will be,” or, “The more money we acquire, the greater our true worth”—we not only end up putting a lot of pressure on ourselves, but we also program our unconscious-body mind and memory to believe these collective decisions. As a result, our physical bodies tighten up from increased stress levels and constricted blood flow. This tension can lead to heart attack, sick leave, anxiety, depression, and an overall disconnect.

To add to this equation, another attribute that holds great importance is the understanding that the unconscious mind is host to our emotions and feelings. Earlier, when I asked you to belly laugh—if you actually tried it—you felt the emotion of happiness come over you. If I asked you to recall a memory of the last time you cried, with some intentional focus, you would feel the same feelings triggered as when you first had the experience.

Our unconscious mind is directly connected to our feelings. It has been said that emotion is literally energy in motion. For example, when we have a good cry, what takes place on the unconscious level of our being is that energy simply flows through our physical body. The emotional energy flow attempts to move us through the experiences we’re having. Have you ever noticed that after a good cry, you are left with a feeling of spaciousness and clarity? It’s much the same after you let yourself feel and express anger.
