SPI

RS-232 works pretty well, but it has some deficiencies: about 20% of the bitstream is overhead; both sides have to know the setup (e.g., baud rate and parity); the RX/TX crossing requirement is a pain because which wire is RX (or TX) depends on your point of view; and other difficulties crop up.

So you have an alternative: SPI (pronounced “spy” or S-P-I). Four kinds of wires connect your processor to a SPI peripheral:

Master-In Slave-Out (MISO), also known as Serial Data In (SDI)
