Chapter 11

Alexei

Ifound her on the side of the road.

She was barely breathing.

There would be hell to pay.

Chapter 12

Camila

Shadows danced in front of me, my eyes flickered open but never for long enough to see actual figures.

I was tired. So fucking tired. My whole body ached and felt so heavy but I wasn’t cold and laying on the dirty hard ground anymore. Warm, plush materials laid against my skin and I would’ve moaned if my throat wasn’t so dry and sore.

I could hear voices too, two men. One was more familiar than the other but my mind was too foggy to place it. Still, I managed to make out a few words.

Road.

Left for dead.

Painkillers.

Miracle.

No matter how much I tried to stay awake, to open my eyes, I kept going in and out of consciousness, never truly awake, but also far from a blissful slumber. No, whenever I let myself succumb to sleep, all I could feel were the rocks cutting and bumping my body as I stumbled down that cliff and the bitter taste of betrayal burning my tongue.

The first thing I felt when I finally came back to consciousness was something wet swiping over my nose.

The second was the never ending pounding inside my head.

I frowned, wanting to push away whatever had just woken me up from the dead with my hand but my whole body ached like I had fallen from a seventy feet tall building, which, I guess wasn’t that far from the truth…

No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t remember anything past the earthy smell of dirt and the piercing pain in my leg which was still throbbing, although not as badly as it used to.

For a second out there, I thought I’d died. Hell, I still wasn’t sure I was alive right now, this could very much be my version of paradise: laying on what felt like the softest cloud ever, the smell of mint and lemon engulfing me, with an unknown creature licking my nose.

When I managed to crack an eye open, though, I understood I was still very much alive. The room I found myself in was unknown to me and it was pretty scarce, only a dresser sat in the corner and a huge TV was mounted on the wall in front of me. The floors were hardwood and the walls painted a rich dark green. A huge window showed me it was still nighttime, which had me even more confused. How long had I been asleep?

Another lick—to my cheek this time— brought my attention away from the window and onto the little thing that mistook my face for a lollipop. A small, fluffy, black thing, more precisely.

“Salem.” I croaked, a small, tired smile stretching my lips and even that hurt.

The kitten meowed back, snuggling against my face in response. I tried to move my hand a second time and miserably failed again, letting it fall back down. There seemed to be something in the back of my hand, a needle maybe, linking it to a tube.
