Convergitation with Our Enemies

The Dalai Lama’s late tutor, Serkhong Rinpoche, loved circuses. He often said that if a bear could be taught to ride a bicycle, then with skillful means and patience, a human being could be taught anything—including how to inter-meditate with his or her enemies. All of our connections and interactions are sacred and meaningful—nothing happens by accident; sometimes our adversaries and enemies prove to be our most profound teachers. They need not even be human. They could take the form of an infectious disease, a weather crisis, a disaster, tragedy, misfortune, grievous loss, or even just a daily disappointment. Any undesirable circumstance or outcome can have the face of an enemy simply because we consider it negative.

To make the journey from the big head to the big heart—from perceiving unwanted circumstances as enemies to regarding them as teachers and change-agents—we must take conscious steps to loosen our egotism. If we do this, eventually we will behave like the Methodist minister from Texas did when she encountered the robber in the parking lot. She empathized with the would-be mugger and trenchantly perceived what was beneath his violent mask. She connected with his pure and uncorrupted innermost spiritual essence, as a troubled and lost child of God—to use her words—and chose love, in that very moment, eschewing fear in favor of connection and the divine embrace of interbeing. This is how inter-meditation opens us up into Divine love in human form. The minister embodied this Lojong aphorism:

Since unwholesome thoughts and harmful actions are everywhere, integrate them into the path of transformation leading to enlightenment.
