Chapter Forty-Six

-Adoncia-

Adoncia stayed in the sitting room as Danika left to work.

The sight of her bruised face was still burned into her mind. The searing pain of knowing there was nothing she could do kept her fixed to the couch as she gripped her head in her hands.

Worries over Danika took her back to a time when she’d asked her father what had made him fall for her mother. They had been from two different worlds, her mother’s father a blue collar worker at her paternal grandfather’s white collar cigar company.

“I had been working the floor, overseeing the workers. She had come in to deliver her father his lunch. As I watched her from a distance there was something about the way she smiled that drew me to her. As I watched I took note of her gentle nature, of her soft smile. The longer I looked the more I saw. And what I saw was strength and intelligence with a burning purpose that called to my own drive and passion for life.”

She thought of Danika and how she’d seen something in her, something hidden beneath that broken and shattered surface, a volcano rumbling beneath the earth’s crust.

“The next time I saw your mother I invited her out for lunch. We spent the whole time talking, connecting right away as we ended up talking till the restaurant’s closing. After that I knew she was someone I wanted in my life. As we spent more time together I realized the way I wanted to be in her life was as her husband.”

But like with Danika there was something keeping them apart. Though her mother had not been married, her father’s family had not liked the idea of their son being with a factory worker’s daughter.

‘Though we were from different worlds I didn’t care what my family thought. I wanted to marry her. But your mother said no. She said my family would never accept her and that it would make our lives harder. I told her ‘I don’t want easy. I just want you.’ Though I passionately tried to convince her that we could make it work, in the end I told her if she was sure it wasn’t what she wanted, I would leave her alone. And I did.”

She wondered now how her father had managed it. She could not imagine her life without Danika in it. Even just having her leave for the night almost broke her every time.

“It was a month later when I found her waiting for me. She told me she wanted the same as me, ‘I want you.’ We were married a week later and a few months after that we moved to Chicago to be free of my parent’s influence.”

It was the freedom Adoncia had now, but without the person to make it worth the sacrifices. Without someone she could talk with for hours and still want more time with at the end of the night.

Someone like Danika.

Someone who understood her, who wanted similar things in life.
