Chapter Three

Kane was just about to sit down when he remembered his manners. “Take a seat. Can I get you another drink?”

“Stop delaying the inevitable, Kane. You wanted to discuss, so let’s discuss.”

Kane held his hands up and flopped down onto the nearest seat. “All right, all right. So, as I say, I think I can probably help you with the wolf problem. Well, I can make sure they don’t go near you again, anyway.”

Paul raised an eyebrow. “And how do you propose to do that? Hire me a bodyguard?”

“Of sorts.” He paused. “Listen. Can I trust you?”

“Trust me? Of course. I can keep my mouth shut. And even if I couldn’t, I got no one to tell anyway.”

Kane took that as a valuable piece of information about Paul’s life. It sounded as though he, too, had no friends or family to speak of. Another thing they had in common. “Okay. Well, uh, I think I figured out why the wolves wouldn’t come near my property.”

“You did?”

“Yes. I think… it’s because they know who I am.”

“Know who you are? What’s that supposed to mean?”

“If you’ll stop interrupting me, I’ll tell you.”

“Sorry.” Paul looked suitably chagrined.

“You see, you and I have a lot in common. We’re, uh, both a certain type of shifter.” He carried on speaking, even as Paul’s mouth dropped open. “And we’re both loners, because of that fact. My family was killed years ago, when I was a child. I escaped only by chance. They were murdered by a local werewolf pack that discovered what we were. For a long time, we’d fitted in with them, pretending to be regular werewolves, like them. Changing at every full moon, and so on. We had no trouble from them. But somehow, they found out the truth. And it scared them. I think you can figure out the rest.”

The empathy in Paul’s eyes was clear. “Yes, I think I can. And I’m sorry about your family. Please, carry on.”

After pulling in a deep breath, Kane continued. “Thank you. Well, for some time afterwards, I struggled. I was only a child, after all. Just ten years old. I knew the most important thing, after survival, was to keep what I was a secret. Fortunately, as you know, we’re not governed by the moon, not forced to shift, so for all intents and purposes, I could appear completely human, one hundred percent of the time. Then I got lucky. A family took me in, and until I was sixteen, things were great. They’d lost a child of their own, so when they found me rummaging in their bins, they were horrified and wanted to help me. I didn’t tell them the whole truth, naturally, just that my family had been killed and I was all alone. Perhaps it was just that I was in the right place at the right time, but they didn’t question me any further, and we quickly became a family. It was wonderful.”

Biting his lip, Kane fell silent for a moment in an attempt to get a handle on his emotions.
