William

William imbued yet another length of metal and passed it to Bomrosy. His back ached from leaning over her worktable, and the wooden bench did his rear no favors. William had become Bomrosy’s personal imbuer, and he was happy to help. Metal worked best for him, and that’s what she needed.

After they’d raided GicCorp, Bomrosy had gone back to the twisted pile of junk and gathered as many dead stones as she could find. Sometimes, she could get them to flair with power, but she struggled to keep them connected.

“Do you need to leave soon to see your imb friend?”

“Yes, I’m meeting her for supper, then I have a meeting with a few radiant leaders.” William used up the last of his magic and handed her the stone. “And that taps me out.”

Bomrosy took it from him and added it to the others. She was building something that looked like a smaller version of what they’d seen in the room. She connected the metal in the same dome shape and then inserted smaller stones in the metal after William had shaped them. It was only about two feet long, but Bomrosy had an amazing memory for detail, and she’d made sure it replicated the power room as perfectly as possible. The main difference was that she only had a broken stone from a scythe to represent the source of power.

“Will you get it to turn on?”

She twisted another wire in place. “I’m actually seeing how we can turn it off. Permanently. It should be simple if we can knock out the scythes. But the stones in the arches might take a bit of work. I’d rather destroy it so they can’t turn it on again.”

“That would be nice. I’m going to run.”

“Is Vic meeting you later?”

He got up from the bench. “She and Kai are coming with me to meet with the radiant. We figured Julian might be more comfortable with just me.”

Bomrosy nodded but didn’t reply. He took that as a dismissal. They worked together most days in silence, and he hoped she would one day forgive him. The only forgiveness he would likely get was after he returned Xiona to normal. He didn’t blame her. He couldn’t even forgive himself.

His brother got up to follow him. “Stay here.” Samuel watched him go without reply. There was no activity from his brother that his father had warned him about. If anything was bound to happen, he hoped they could figure out how to bring his soul out before it did.

William tucked his wand in its harness. He didn’t feel the need to hide it since only reapers were in danger. One good thing about blending into the crowd. He waved to the imb as she moved the glass aside, and he went through. He took a path away from Vic’s home. He would meet Julian, the boss he’d had for one day, closer to the center of Verrin at a restaurant. The meeting should end an hour or two before nightfall, and that would give him enough time to meet with Vic and Kai.
