Chapter 11

“You sure you want to go?” I asked the beautiful inventor. “It’s not a problem if you don’t. I can do it instead.”

“No,” Astrea said firmly. “I’ve avoided facing the consequences of my choices for long enough. I always knew I’d have to go back to Bioniin and explain to my family at some point, so I might as well do it now, since they need to be warned, anyway.”

I nodded. “I’ll come with you. Oh, unless you really don’t want me to, of course.”

“I want you to,” Astrea replied instantly, and she gave me a small, shy smile.

“I think the rest of us should stay here,” Prinna said after a second. “It might be a slightly… delicate trip, and it’s probably best if it’s just the two of you.”

“Is that okay with you?” I asked Astrea.

“Yes,” she replied with a determined nod. “And I’d like to leave as soon as possible.”

“Of course,” I said softly and turned to look at Farrah. “Did you guys give the Greens the tour of the inn?”

“Not yet,” my light-bending lover replied. “We were planning to do it around three-thirty. They got even more equipment out this morning, and there have been all sorts of strange beeping sounds and shouts of excitement coming from down there, so we thought we’d let them enjoy whatever it is they’re doing until it’s time for the tour.”

“Okay,” I chuckled and looked at my watch. “Well, it’s about a quarter past three now, so you’ve got fifteen minutes before the tour’s meant to start. If Astrea and I head to Bioniin now, can the rest of you split up? Two of you can entertain the guests and give them the tour, and the other two can start brainstorming ideas for how we can infiltrate this fortress tomorrow.”

The five women stared at me with confused faces.

“Brain… storming?” Kaz asked with an uncertain glance around the room. “That sounds unpleasant.”

“Is it painful?” Farrah frowned. “It sounds like some sort of curse.”

“Or some hideous disease,” Prinna added and wrinkled her nose.

“Ahhh, no,” I laughed. “Basically, it means to contribute ideas for how to solve a problem.”

“Earth sayings really are strange, sometimes,” Izzie murmured. “Anyway, why don’t Prinna and Farrah do the tour, since Farrah can sort the lights and Prinna can sense the family’s emotions? That way, Kaz and I can start storming our brains about the fortress.”

“Sounds good to me.” I grinned and stood up.

“Good luck with your trip,” Prinna said and gave Astrea a quick hug. “I can sense you’re nervous, but don’t be. Your family loves you deeply, and I’m sure your father, at least, will understand why you had to leave.”

Astrea gave her a grateful smile and nodded. Then, my white-blonde witch and Farrah headed out of the suite to go find the Greens, and Izzie and Kaz began looking for pens and paper to start mapping out ideas.

“Are you ready?” I asked Astrea.

The inventor took a deep breath and stood up. “Let’s go.”
