Confrontation

Audrey woke in the morning before Seb. She slipped out the door to walk around the lake with a journal and paper in hand. The sun had risen and cast an orange glow over the water. Kennedy taught a yoga class in the far off distance. Audrey sat down under a tree nearby to watch her friend teach. She thought back to Kris. His constant yelling, aggression, emotional manipulation, demands of sex. It was hard to believe that Seb was anything similar to him. Yet she couldn’t get the association out of her mind.

“Aha.” Audrey said to herself, as a light bulb went off in her head. She knew what she had to do. She had to find out why Seb considered himself a bad man, and how he had gotten involved in the mafia in the first place. The answer to the questions would solve her doubts. She made a list of Seb’s good and bad qualities. After the list was made, she realized the good outnumbered the bad. She gazed at the list and muttered to herself. “If only he would open up about his secrets...” She would confront him when he cornered her next. If he could play that game, then so could she.

She laid there watching the peace of the rising sun in the harmony of the yoga class in front of her. She relaxed in her thoughts, finding a peace within herself she had been missing since she had first gotten together with Kris several years ago.

Kennedy peered over at her after her yoga classes had ended for the morning. Audrey laid there in the mid-morning sun with a hand over her eyes to block the sunrays from in between the leaves of the large oak tree that she was underneath.

Kennedy walked over to Audrey, and offered her a hand. Audrey took it and rose quickly. “Breakfast?” Kennedy asked, simply.

Audrey looked back at her cabin and nodded.

A few minutes later, they arrived at the cafeteria. “That dance last night was saucy.” Kennedy said as she bit into a large banana.

“It wasn’t planned.” Audrey shook her head. “I-I don’t know what came over me.”

“Passion.” Kennedy stated. “It’s what happens to all of us when we like someone. You were entranced by him and the song.”

“M-maybe you’re right. I’m not used to this. With Kris, it was different. There was no passion. Only love out of duty, out of being together for so long. When we first got together, we were so young. It’s hard to tell love from lust and wrong from right when someone gets in your head like he did.” Audrey stayed quiet and took a sip of her coffee.

Kennedy paused. “You never told me about the breakup with Kris. I remember you in high school with him. You always sent me letters about how in love with him you were.”

Audrey gulped. She couldn’t tell Kennedy the complete truth. She didn’t want to involve her good friend in any danger. “He became involved in illegal activities.
