âI swear, the human world is so cool,â Jas said as the two of us walked to the playground where Iâd told Owen to meet us.
I laughed, my breath fogging in the cold air. âWhat are you finding so fascinating?â
âJust how simplistic it is. The air is so pure and untainted by magic.â She took a deep breath.
âHuh,â I said. Not until then did I even notice Jas was right. The air was different. Simpler, as sheâd said. I supposed it really was because there was no magic interfering with it.
âWell, anyway,â I said, as we reached the playground, âthis is where I infamously disappeared from.â I looked sideways at Jas, debating just how much to tell her. Even though we had our share of bullies at school, I wasnât sure I wanted to reveal how much I had been tormented by Sam McCall here in the human world, especially since Jas was so in awe of everything.
âI tripped on the roundabout right there.â I pointed to the rusty old merry-go-round. âAnd fell through a portal I obviously hadnât known was there. Next thing I knew, I was lying on the foyer floor at Figsternâs.â
âMost epic school entrance ever,â she said with a laugh. âIn years to come, youâll be a legend for that.â
âWeâll see.â
We headed toward the swings, where we took our seats and waited. âMy best friend should be here in a second. His name is Owen, and I think youâll like him.â
âHeâs a regular human?â
âAs far as we know,â I said with a shrug. âHere he comes.â I spotted Owenâs red curls whipping in the cold wind as he made his way toward the playground. Initially, he was looking at me. But it didnât take long for his focus to zero in on Jas.
âUhm⦠Hi,â he said, his eyes darting between the two of us.
âOwen, this is my roommate, Jasmine. But everyone calls her Jas.â
She hopped off the swing and held out her hand to Owen with a bright grin on her face. âHi! Pleasure to meet you! Iâm so excited Maddie let me come to the human world with herâ¦â She gasped and clapped her free hand over her mouth. She then glanced back at me. âIâm sorry⦠Does he know?â
âWell, now he does,â I teased, letting her stare at me wide-eyed for a few beats before I added, âYes, Jas, he knows.â
She gave a huge sigh of relief. âOkay, good. Thought Iâd slipped up there. Iâm guessing most humans donât know about the fae world, so I have to be more careful with that around here.â
âWell, lucky for you, I donât know many other humans outside of my mom and Owen,â I said. âI doubt youâll get to meet many more during your stay here. I hope you wonât find that too disappointing.â
âNot at all.â
âUhhh⦠yeah,â Owen said, bringing our attention back to him. A deep flush had formed over his face, leaving his skin just a few shades lighter than his hair despite the cold temperature.
