“I swear, the human world is so cool,” Jas said as the two of us walked to the playground where I’d told Owen to meet us.

I laughed, my breath fogging in the cold air. “What are you finding so fascinating?”

“Just how simplistic it is. The air is so pure and untainted by magic.” She took a deep breath.

“Huh,” I said. Not until then did I even notice Jas was right. The air was different. Simpler, as she’d said. I supposed it really was because there was no magic interfering with it.

“Well, anyway,” I said, as we reached the playground, “this is where I infamously disappeared from.” I looked sideways at Jas, debating just how much to tell her. Even though we had our share of bullies at school, I wasn’t sure I wanted to reveal how much I had been tormented by Sam McCall here in the human world, especially since Jas was so in awe of everything.

“I tripped on the roundabout right there.” I pointed to the rusty old merry-go-round. “And fell through a portal I obviously hadn’t known was there. Next thing I knew, I was lying on the foyer floor at Figstern’s.”

“Most epic school entrance ever,” she said with a laugh. “In years to come, you’ll be a legend for that.”

“We’ll see.”

We headed toward the swings, where we took our seats and waited. “My best friend should be here in a second. His name is Owen, and I think you’ll like him.”

“He’s a regular human?”

“As far as we know,” I said with a shrug. “Here he comes.” I spotted Owen’s red curls whipping in the cold wind as he made his way toward the playground. Initially, he was looking at me. But it didn’t take long for his focus to zero in on Jas.

“Uhm… Hi,” he said, his eyes darting between the two of us.

“Owen, this is my roommate, Jasmine. But everyone calls her Jas.”

She hopped off the swing and held out her hand to Owen with a bright grin on her face. “Hi! Pleasure to meet you! I’m so excited Maddie let me come to the human world with her…” She gasped and clapped her free hand over her mouth. She then glanced back at me. “I’m sorry… Does he know?”

“Well, now he does,” I teased, letting her stare at me wide-eyed for a few beats before I added, “Yes, Jas, he knows.”

She gave a huge sigh of relief. “Okay, good. Thought I’d slipped up there. I’m guessing most humans don’t know about the fae world, so I have to be more careful with that around here.”

“Well, lucky for you, I don’t know many other humans outside of my mom and Owen,” I said. “I doubt you’ll get to meet many more during your stay here. I hope you won’t find that too disappointing.”

“Not at all.”

“Uhhh… yeah,” Owen said, bringing our attention back to him. A deep flush had formed over his face, leaving his skin just a few shades lighter than his hair despite the cold temperature.
