The next morning, Anuli gathered the girls to perform the ritual to give Nkechi back her memories. In Anuli’s backyard, she, Kosum and Nicole stood in a triangle around Nkechi, with a circular line carved into the dirt that joined each of them. Anuli handed a teddy bear to a confused Nkechi.

“What’s this, Auntie?”

“It was your favourite teddy bear growing up. Your father bought it for you. It will act as a tether from your past to help bring forth the memories of that time with your father,” she explained.

“Wow. I don’t even remember this tatty old thing, let alone it being my favourite,” Nkechi said, patting the dust off it.

“You will remember it soon – if all goes well, that is. Now, girls, we need to be careful. It’s dangerous enough to remove one’s memories but even more so to return them. We don’t want to turn our Nkechi here into a pan of scrambled eggs.”

“Jesus, no pressure then,” Kosum laughed.

“Shh! Let us begin. Retour de memoire. Say it with me, girls.”

“Retour de memoire.”

As they the uttered the spell it began to take effect, creating a dome-shaped forcefield upon the line in the dirt. It created an unbreakable barrier to contain the spell and stop any outside interference. Nkechi’s eyes began to flutter, her body vibrating, jerking uncontrollably. She rose into the air, looking light as a feather and stiff as a board as her limbs became hardened, and crookedly locked into place. They had no idea whether the spell was working or not. All they could do was hope. They continued to chant the incantation until Nkechi began to scream, her head thrashing as the of memories forced their way back into her conscience. Suddenly, Nkechi dropped from the few metres she had arisen back to the ground, letting out a burst of energy that knocked the others off their feet.

Nkechi regained consciousness as she lay on the ground and saw the teddy bear beside her, choking in the dirt. She latched onto it, remembering the moment she had received it. Her father had bought it for her on one of his trips. He had told her to hold it close whenever she missed him.

“Dad?” she whispered to the bear as she pulled it tightly to her chest. “Are you there?” Of course, there was no answer and the bear simply became dampened by Nkechi’s tears

They all slowly rose from the ground and recovered their balance before surrounding Nkechi.

“Are you okay?” Kosum asked softly, seeing Nkechi still clinging to her teddy bear.

“I think so.”

Though the spell had worked, it wasn’t as simple as that: Nkechi would spend the next few days remembering chunks of memories at a time. It was a slow and painful process, each memory of her dad bringing with it a flood of joy and serotonin, only for her to be reminded that she would never see his face again. He had missed so much of her life. Nkechi knew it wasn’t her fault but
