3 Little Ghoul
by A.R. Braun
Helpless begat merciless. On a wing and a spell, hanging on a curse. A hex cast by a little girl so violated, so destroyed, that her last few breaths had uttered the chant that brought filthy-wicked Noire, comeuppance for the perverted.
Her uncle had been into the occult; therefore, the victim had known whom to conjure.
Straight blond hair hanging halfway down her back, Noire skipped down the street, the kind of girl one sat behind in church and, if one was a pervert, could see her nude back when she pulled on that constricting dress during the summer. Not that she was the loveliest of the lovely. Truth be told, she was too thin, even though she ate like a . . . ahem . . . goat. Every once and again, sheâd stop to play hopscotch with other girls, the precious ones giggling the day away. And why not? Noire was nine-years-old. In dog years. At least she looked like she was nine.
But Noire stayed out at night.
In the seedy area of the city.
A dark blot of the metropolis.
Not chilled by the cold.
Waiting.
Breath held.
Smelling blood.
She stood playing pat-a-cake with a brick wall. As she bent backwards like when sitting alone at a table during coffee and treats at church when someone walked near herâfor the girl whoâd called her into the path of lascivious men was a member of a parish, and what better place to seek out rapists?â her amber strands brushing the cement, she saw the perp upside down.
Typical: squat, obese, spectacled, bald, and wearing a suit with the tie loosened because he perspired like a pig; he crept up on her, a bedbug after her blood.
She turned on her heel. âHi-ya!â she chirped.
âHey there, little lady,â he snorted, rubbing his hands together, like a man whoâd found a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. âWhatâre you doing out so late?â
âMy mommyâs got a man over, and she told me to stay away for a couple of hours.â
Shellacked with sweat, the perp pulled out a handkerchief and wiped the slimy perspiration from his face. Funny, how the slightly-cold weather didnât chase the sweat away.
âItâs not safe out here,â he snickered, his nasally voice trying to get on her nerves.
She blinked at him. âAre you my friend?â she sang.
The man bobbleheaded as his glasses steamed up. âOf course,â he sniggered.
âIâm Noire.â She tossed her waterfall of a mane. âWhatâs your name?â
âAlfred.â He advanced on her, and she didnât even bat an eye. He stuck his hand out for a shake.
She took it, then made a face because his hand was not only clammy, but also wet. She yanked away from him.
Alfred: âSorry. I get nervous meeting new people.â
Noire: âYou sure your nameâs not Chester . . .?â
She winked at him with her wan eye.
â. . . the molester?â
âHa-ha-huh-huh-heh. Why donât you come home with me so I can keep you safe. Iâve got candy. We can relax and watch some cartoons on television.
