Figure 10 A very simplified example of hierarchical processing. At the lowest level are pixels, and they are combined to define primitives such as arcs and line segments. The next layer combines them to define letters, and the next combines them to define words. The representation becomes more abstract as we go up. Continuous lines denote positive (excitatory) connections, and dashed lines denote negative (inhibitory) connections. The letter o exists in “book” but not in “bell.” At higher levels, activity may propagate using more abstract relationships such as the relationship between “book” and “read,” and in a multilingual context, between “book” and “livre,” the French word for book.
