Let’s address the “pairs” theory because you are technically right but let’s think of this in slope form. If you recall, in slope-intercept form, m is a slope, x is x and b is y-intercept. Therefore, a actually refers to slope here, x is not a pair but a single number, and b is still y-intercept. Additionally, one can write (3,1) as x and y, but it can also be written as (0,0) + (3,0) + (0,1) where (0,0) is the origin. Therefore, Vector X is still 3 here, it’s just been separated from y and origin is assumed because of the pairs, the zero is the origin and the second is the direction thus (3,0) or 3.
