Overfitting is a common problem in machine learning, where a model performs well on the training data but fails to generalize to unseen data.

Underfitting happens when the model is too simple (think about when we used a linear regression model when we needed a decision tree regressor model) and does not capture the underlying patterns in the data.

Both overfitting and underfitting lead to poor performance on unseen data.
