When somebody wants to chat with you, the text appears as a notification (page 45). If you want to shoot over a quick reply, point to the notification bubble, click Options→Show More, and off you go.

If you’d rather open Messages for a full-blown conversation, click the notification bubble instead.

iMessage Specials

Whenever you’re corresponding with another iCloud account holder, messaging becomes infinitely more flexible and powerful. As noted at the beginning of this chapter, there is no length limit to a message, you can use formatting, you can exchange files, and the whole thing is generally a lot more fun. Let us count the ways:

Informative feedback. iMessages are inherently more informative than regular text messages. For example, if your correspondent is typing a message but hasn’t yet sent it, an animated ellipsis () appears next to his speech bubble on your screen. It lets you know he’s working on a reply and not just ignoring you. NOTE: The dots remain on the screen for only 60 seconds and then disappear. If they go away, it could mean either that (a) the other guy has changed his mind about replying, or (b) he’s writing a really long answer.
