Eve and Harmonie stood, hip to hip, arms slung around each other’s waists. Eve rubbed the deep curve and watched Jack row toward them silently. The small boat cleaved the water, and the reflections that had been so crystal clear undulated behind him.

Thoughts of him had interrupted her more than once, but she’d worked through the distraction and earned a full day off.

They stood on her little pier, picnic basket at their feet. She’d texted Jack, asking how she should prepare, and he’d told her to wear soft-soled, non-marking shoes, suggested a hat, and informed her that the guest was responsible for food. Finger food, something easy to eat between tacks or while steering. She’d spent the previous day making tiny spanakopita and baklava, using an entire package of phyllo dough. That morning, she’d fried little falafel balls and made tzatziki, spicy Harissa, and a mint sauce.

Harmonie had packed it all while she’d gotten dressed. It took her two hours to fuss over her hair—was there an attractive ’do that wouldn’t get ripped to pieces in the wind? She went with a complex herringbone braid and built her outfit from the shoes up.

She didn’t want to wear athletic shoes. Yoga pants and a light shirt might be practical, but she felt like retaining at least some of her punch. She’d gone with ballet shoes, loose pants that banded close around her ankles, and a cap-sleeved bodice that hugged her curves. The perfect bra let her lean over and work without falling out of her shirt. She’d danced in less.

A little nervous excitement tingled in her belly. It felt good, unfamiliar. Almost forgotten. She felt more like she was about to step out on stage in front of eighty thousand screaming fans than like she was going on a date.

Of course, she hadn’t dated in a while. Even when she had, too many evenings had been wrapped up in furthering her career instead of furthering an interesting acquaintance.

She smiled at the idea of calling Jack an acquaintance at that point. The excitement came from the opposite direction. She liked him, a lot, and she was wound up at the idea of spending more time with him. In and out of scene. She savored her nervousness, rolled it around like fine wine in her mouth, then swallowed.

The excitement held reverberations from a surprising yearning for a regular life. Well, as regular as Jack’s. Community, a club he enjoyed, friendships on the docks. She’d skew it if she tried to be part of his world, but it attracted her nonetheless.

Eve caught the rope Jack threw her and handed it to Harmonie. She wrapped her arms around her and pulled her close. Harmonie snuggled up, their tits pressing. Eve lowered her lips to Harmonie’s neck and breathed her in. Familiarity, love.

Harmonie said, chin on Eve’s neck, “Be good.”

Eve nipped the soft skin of her neck. “Be bad.”

Harmonie would be spending her day hacking into Eve’s record label’s backup files. They needed to know whether the label planned on suing Eve for breach of contract, and emails were included in those backups.
