Chapter Fourteen

Devon sat at the back of the courthouse, silent. He watched as Jordan’s lawyer argued the charges against his client. The fighter was to finally get the date for his plea hearing, on the assault and gambling charges. Devon knew he shouldn’t have been there but no one had noticed him slip into the building and take his seat. He needed to make sure the kid had a fighting chance. Desperately, he wished someone would see how ridiculous the charges against him really were.

Haze Rider, the other fighter still involved in the mess had a girlfriend who was six months pregnant. Devon hadn’t known that until two days ago. The other fighter still being detained had his bail hearing the week before, and the amount put forth was more than he could pay.

By the looks of Jordan’s hearing, this was going to be no different. Devon tuned out the lawyers arguing up front, waiting for the final number to be handed out. His phone, turned on silent, lit up from a text. The message was from Nic, asking if he wanted something specific for dinner when she got home from work. He smiled at the screen and replied back quickly. He’d eat whatever the hell she made, and Nic knew it, too.

Tomorrow was bound to be another difficult day for Devon. After much prodding from his brother, he’d agreed to bring his cousin and Nic to dinner at their place. It wasn’t that he was worried about everybody getting along, as Kirra had met Chaine and Livvy before. Instead, Devon was concerned about how his brother might react to the budding relationship between him and Nic.

It had been nearly a month since the bedroom incident, but Devon wasn’t in any position to complain about the fact they had yet to actually define their relationship for what it was. They went on dates a couple nights a week. He’d learned more about her hometown of Grand Falls, New Brunswick and the people she left behind to start something new. Gaining his bed back, he got to have the glorious smell and feel of Nic’s body against his every morning.

Sometimes their argumentative sides came out sharp and quick like a short bladed knife, and other times they didn’t have a thing to say at all. Devon couldn’t deny he was learning a private woman in a very public way, either. The picture of them at the nightclub had in fact been posted to the Sun’s website. Rumors of the girl with short blonde hair circulated quicker than either of them thought it would. Some people were ignorant enough to say Devon should have stuck to his own color, which while he’d dealt with that kind of racism before, it still never failed to shock the hell out him.

His aunts called, wanting confirmation he was in a relationship. That bothered him more than anything. They should have found out from him that he’d met a woman who’d caught his eye, not from a damned website who exaggerated the circumstances, and used unidentified sources.
