Chapter Five

I walk away from Diego knowing damn well he’ll follow. Sidling up to the roulette table, I watch players place their bets, wondering how the game works. The feel of someone’s presence behind me makes my red-stained lips smirk. Glancing over my shoulder, I ask Diego a question.

“Do you know how to play?”

Diego reaches in his pocket and pulls out a fistful of poker chips. “I do. If you don’t, I’d recommend keeping it simple. Although, you don’t seem like the type of woman who likes to keep things simple.”

Batting my dark lashes, I tease, “It’s as if you’ve known me forever.”

Flashing his gleaming white smile, Diego offers some basic advice. “A straight up bet is gambling on a single number. Any number on the table. Zero to thirty-six. Or you might choose to bet on a color. Red or black. Once all bets are placed, the dealer spins the wheel, the ball drops, and we wait for the wheel to stop spinning and the ball to land.”

“Sounds easy,” I say as the wheel starts spinning and I think about what kind of bet I’m going to place.

Diego laughs, “Nothing is easy, my dear.”

A tall, leggy brunette slinks up next to Diego and slips her arm around his waist. Planting her cranberry-colored lips on his cheek, she smells like a flower garden and is as equally beautiful. Her pin-straight tresses flow well past her bare, silky shoulders and her small breasts barely billow out the top of her gold, strapless dress. A long, thin necklace gets lost between her cleavage, and she smiles at me when she resurfaces from the kiss. “Is he bothering you?” she asks in a flirty manner. “Because if so, I’ll give him a spanking.”

“He’s not bothering me,” I assure her, even though I’d love to see her smack Diego’s tight ass.

The beauty pouts and says, “Boo. I was hoping he was being a bad boy.”

Giving her a playful wink, I reply, “The night is still young!”

The three of us laugh as Diego hands out introductions. “Lucinda, this is my friend Hattie. Hattie, Lucinda.”

“Please, call me Lucy,” I tell them, as the roulette wheel stops spinning and some of the crowd cheers.

Winners collect their chips and Diego cocks an eyebrow in question. “Have you decided on a bet?” he asks, as I randomly choose a number.

“I’m going to bet on number fourteen,” I declare, and Diego drops his stack of chips on the number I’ve chosen.

Once all bets are placed, the wheel spins, the ball drops and when it stops, it lands on the number fourteen.

Hattie bounces up and down as my eyes widen with excitement. “Do it again, Lucy!” she shouts as Diego claims our winnings and waits for me to announce my bet.

“Number twenty-two!” I shout back, getting swept away in the fun.

Diego places our growing stack of chips on the number twenty-two, the wheel spins, the ball drops, and it lands on the number twenty-two.

Hattie pushes Diego out of the way and grabs my face with her hands.
