CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Lucretia finished tying the many laces on the stays of her corseted dress. It was a white linen piece that had been newly made for her by one of the local dressmakers, a new style he had created that had not yet been seen. She stood before the large glass of the Venetian mirror in her room and looked at herself knowing that the dress was beautiful and the dressmakerâs work an innovation but she could not help but to sigh in frustration.
She had tried on seven different dresses already, all of them new, most of them masterful works of art by the dressmakers of Rome who, after hearing of her decision in the court, all sought her favor. Beautiful they were, every one, but none of them made her happy. Usually she could spend an entire day trying on new dresses and enjoy every minute of it, but lately such things gave her little pleasure. She had sent her ladies away earlier, wanting some time to be alone with her thoughts, but her thoughts were what had been bothering her. Perhaps she should have bid them stay, if only for the distraction of their company.
Her father had returned to Rome and resumed his duties, thankful for her having taken care of so many matters in his absence and even complimentary of her work, but leaving her with nothing to do except worry. It had been weeks and Lucretia still had no word from her husband. Giulia had visited her yesterday and tried to convince her to take a ride with her in the country, but it sounded like an empty pursuit so she had declined. There was nothing she could do that would make her feel satisfied.
Even when she had handled her fatherâs duties in administering to the City of Rome, it had only dulled the feeling for a time. She had been so busy, she had simply not had the time to dwell on her fears for her beloved Alfonse. Now that she had all the time in the world, it was all she could think about. She turned away from the mirror and nearly died of fright. In the doorway to her chamber stood a man with a beard, staring at her. The surprise of seeing someone there when she had not expected anyone had put her in a mild state of shock and it was not until the man smiled at her that she realized who it was.
âAlfonse!â she cried and ran to him.
âMy love!â he said, smiling at her warmly. âI have returned to you.â
Lucretia took him in her arms and kissed his face and his lips, not caring whether the coarse hair on his face made her skin raw.
âYou frightened me,â she told him. âI almost did not recognize you.â
âI am sorry my lady wife, I did not mean to frighten you. I had merely hoped to surprise you.â
âI am just so glad you're alive,â she said, embracing him tightly. âI missed you very much.
