Ever since Bernadette got moved to the rehabilitation facility, Rikki spent each night home alone. She hated every minute of it. For the last eight nights, she endured lonely showers and poor attempts at sleeping in their bed. She clutched Bernadette’s Pooh bear nightly, but he just wasn’t cutting it without Bernadette attached to it. Despite being the middle of summer, the quiet house was cold, and when Rikki woke that Monday morning before sunrise, she decided to give up on sleep and head over to the facility.

She swept the enormous pile of ignored mail into two canvas shopping bags. Madison had been commissioned to fetch their mail from the box and check on the house while Bernadette was in the hospital, and Rikki stayed down in the city. Shasti had asked Madison to flush toilets, run water in the sinks, and make sure there were no raccoons in the pantry.

Yes, all that mail needed to be dealt with starting today. Rikki was sure there was an equally large pile at the coffee shop, but she couldn’t bring herself to abandon Bernadette and actually go to work. Lydia, Mark, and Marta gave her daily reports, which was good enough for now.

Bernadette had been in the facility for a week and a day at his point, and each day Rikki brought in something Bernadette wanted. One day it was the laptop. Another day it was some loose clothing and some snacks. A handheld grabber came next, and today Rikki was bringing a large analog clock that Bernadette had been jonesing for. Rikki also stashed a small clit vibrator in her pocket. Who knew if they’d ever get a private moment to use it. She staged everything by the front door near Bernadette’s briefcase and made two to-go coffees — one for her and one for Bernadette.

Rikki showed up at the facility well before visiting hours, but they let her in any way. There was a reason for that. One week into her stay, Bernadette had already become a staff favorite. Rikki knew it was because she thanked them and was sincerely grateful for the attention and care they gave her. Kind of like the attention she gave her students, her friends, and Rikki, too.

Rikki dumped the bags of mail on the floor and dove into the bed with her girl. They slept for another hour or so until a nurse woke them up to start Bernadette’s day.

At the pre-ordained time, a soft knock sounded on the closed door to Bernadette’s room.

“How do I look, Rikki?”

“Uh, baby,” Rikki said, “there are a million ways to answer that. You look good.”

“Thank you.” Bernadette reached up and ran her fingers along the stretchy fabric of her day collar. “How does my hair look?”

“Fantastic, baby.”

“Come on in,” Bernadette called, her voice strong.

Madison came into the room first, followed by Shasti. Madison was uncharacteristically quiet and stopped at the foot of the bed, her eyes down as if she were afraid to look at Bernadette.

“Hi, Madison,” Bernadette said gently.
