Loud screams and the laughter of children greeted my ears for the last three hours. My family of four maneuvered through the crowded walking area, trying to avoid the throngs of people milling about the theme park. Throughout our trek, we passed and ignored the catcalling vendors trying to tempt us into games that were overpriced and likely rigged to limit the chances of winning.

I’d gotten suckered enough times to realize putting so much money into a rigged game was foolish and could be put to better use.

Like on food and actual souvenirs from the gift shop.

My flip-flops clacked loudly with each step I took. I’d come prepared, arriving in sneakers first to endure the miles of walking as we hit every corner of the park. Now that our trip was nearing its end, I’d changed from my sneakers to sandals and exchanged my t-shirt for a swimsuit top for the water rides we’d visit before heading home.

Each of us wore a backpack with a change of clothes. Mine was heavier than the other three because I was extra and always brought all kinds of supplies that I didn’t want to overpay for at the park. Outside of my towel, shoes, and change of clothes, I carried bottles of water, sunscreen, sun visors and Band-Aids because my youngest could find a way to hurt himself in a padded room.

“Don’t get behind!”

I turned at the loud voice, smiling at the group of pre-teens all dressed in bright orange shirts, jogging behind a stern-faced woman with a similar collared version of their t-shirt. She stopped, whirling to do a quick count, then strode off again, ignoring the giggling girls trailing behind her.

A slight tug brought my attention forward to Truth, who’d hooked his finger through my belt loop, pulling me out of my nosy stare.

I smiled sheepishly, then bit into the tender meat of the smoked turkey leg that was damn near the size of my forearm. Spending time with my children and ex-husband was the highlight of this trip, but these perfectly cooked legs were a close second.

Truth snickered at my greed, but I ignored him, continuing to munch on the meat even after he leaned over. Butterflies fluttered to life in my stomach when he placed a gentle kiss on my forehead and tossed an arm lazily over my shoulder.

I looked up, finding his penetrating gaze on me. Soft and inviting eyes lit with mirth as he shook his head at my love of the smoked meat.

Being with him was like old times Like before, when we had genuine fun together without the tension and unspoken words that had festered and lingered, souring each attempt we’d made to be a family.

Z’s infectious laughter drew our gazes a moment later, and I immediately missed the connection with Truth. I couldn’t resist a smile at our son, who skipped ahead of us, still bubbling with energy since Truth had declared we’d needed a family outing and brought us to the nearby mega theme park, Adventure Island.
