From the moment I step into those school doors on Monday, it seems like all eyes are on me. I so badly want to fight the feeling, to think Iâm being paranoid, but after second period, it becomes all the more clear that me and Prince are the talk of the school. I catch stares from girls in between classes, and whispers and sharp glances while sitting at my desk. During lunch I do my usual, grab a sandwich from the cafeteria and scarf it down before heading to the computer lab. And while I made progress this past weekend, when I go to open my Google Docs to write my essay, all I can do for the first thirty minutes is stare at the screen, trying to distract myself from feeling like Iâm part of the latest hallway tea. Soon enough, when words finally start to flow, in walks the last person I want to see. And she has the nerve to sit right next to me. I attempt to avoid her for as long as I can, but my fingers go numb and Iâm unable to focus on my essay.
âHey, Dani,â she coos. I donât even look at her, nor do I acknowledge her greeting. She clears her throat. âSo I was uh⦠just wanted to check in and see how youâre doing. We havenât talked in a while.â
âFor good reason,â I say.
She lowers her voice. âI was just thinking maybe we could hang out like old timesâ¦.â
I whip my head her way. âWhy do you keep doing this?â I ask.
âDoing what?â she asks.
âItâs obvious you want something from me, Destiny. You always have. Whether itâs a ride or a hypeman or to borrow whatever, itâs always been about you. We were friends for so long, but I was too young and naive to see that.â
âThatâs not true,â she snaps back, leaning in closer. âYour friendship was always important to me.â
I switch up my approach and soften a bit. âHow have you been?â I ask.
âIâve been good, trying to get the last bit of fun in before we graduate. I just miss having all this fun with my girl,â she utters, and I smile.
âSo,â I say, with fake enthusiasm. âWhat did you have in mind this weekend?â
She grins. âWell, thereâs this party on Saturday, and seeing as your new boyfriend is deejaying thereâ¦â
I laugh, shaking my head. âYou donât even see what youâre doing, do you?â
âWhat are you talking about?â
âThis!â I scowl. âYou only want to patch things up âcause of who Iâm dating. Get out of my face, Destiny.â
Destiny stands up over me. âExcuse me?!â Iâve completely pissed her off, and weâre starting to get an audience.
âWhatâs going on here?â the lab assistant questions us from across the room.
I stand up, meeting her eye to eye. âIâm trying to work and this girl wonât leave me alone,â I respond. Everyone in the computer lab is glued to me and Destiny, ready to witness a fight. And in walks⦠Prince.
