* * *

From the moment I step into those school doors on Monday, it seems like all eyes are on me. I so badly want to fight the feeling, to think I’m being paranoid, but after second period, it becomes all the more clear that me and Prince are the talk of the school. I catch stares from girls in between classes, and whispers and sharp glances while sitting at my desk. During lunch I do my usual, grab a sandwich from the cafeteria and scarf it down before heading to the computer lab. And while I made progress this past weekend, when I go to open my Google Docs to write my essay, all I can do for the first thirty minutes is stare at the screen, trying to distract myself from feeling like I’m part of the latest hallway tea. Soon enough, when words finally start to flow, in walks the last person I want to see. And she has the nerve to sit right next to me. I attempt to avoid her for as long as I can, but my fingers go numb and I’m unable to focus on my essay.

“Hey, Dani,” she coos. I don’t even look at her, nor do I acknowledge her greeting. She clears her throat. “So I was uh… just wanted to check in and see how you’re doing. We haven’t talked in a while.”

“For good reason,” I say.

She lowers her voice. “I was just thinking maybe we could hang out like old times….”

I whip my head her way. “Why do you keep doing this?” I ask.

“Doing what?” she asks.

“It’s obvious you want something from me, Destiny. You always have. Whether it’s a ride or a hypeman or to borrow whatever, it’s always been about you. We were friends for so long, but I was too young and naive to see that.”

“That’s not true,” she snaps back, leaning in closer. “Your friendship was always important to me.”

I switch up my approach and soften a bit. “How have you been?” I ask.

“I’ve been good, trying to get the last bit of fun in before we graduate. I just miss having all this fun with my girl,” she utters, and I smile.

“So,” I say, with fake enthusiasm. “What did you have in mind this weekend?”

She grins. “Well, there’s this party on Saturday, and seeing as your new boyfriend is deejaying there…”

I laugh, shaking my head. “You don’t even see what you’re doing, do you?”

“What are you talking about?”

“This!” I scowl. “You only want to patch things up ’cause of who I’m dating. Get out of my face, Destiny.”

Destiny stands up over me. “Excuse me?!” I’ve completely pissed her off, and we’re starting to get an audience.

“What’s going on here?” the lab assistant questions us from across the room.

I stand up, meeting her eye to eye. “I’m trying to work and this girl won’t leave me alone,” I respond. Everyone in the computer lab is glued to me and Destiny, ready to witness a fight. And in walks… Prince.
