Chapter Fifteen
Fast Food Kind of Morning
Raven had a restless night in bed. The noise from Ronâs snoring was so loud she stayed awake all night. The moment she drifted off; a loud snore woke her again.
She crawled out of bed and slipped into jeans and a sweatshirt and slogged her way downstairs to the new kitchen. She looked at the new glass cooktop. It was smooth with black and white labels, âon/off and +/-â. She touched the âonâ lettering and a 5 appeared, then an F, then nothing.
She breathed out and then composed herself and searched the house for her purse. It will be a fast-food for breakfast today, and she left the house in her car. She stopped at the usual long line of cars idling at the drive-through. If you live in California, expect a line of people or cars.
Raven ordered and waited her turn for the next window to be served. She checked the order after the girl handed it to her and drove away. Inside the house, she walked into the kitchen to see Ron standing there in his boxers.
âWhere were you?â He asked.
âI left to pick up breakfast. Iâm still learning how to operate my new appliances.â
Ron grunted and grabbed a sandwich from the bag, and sat down to eat. After the night before, Raven was not feeling hospitable to her unexpected guest. She sat down opposite him and picked out another sandwich to eat.
âIâm going out today. I have errands,â she stated.
âFine with me. I have papers to review for the new position.â
âShould we go out to dinner?â
âIs there a good steak place?â He asked.
She nodded. âI know a place, youâll like it.â
Ron finished the sandwich and crumpled up the paper wrap. He stood up. âWhat else is there to eat here?â He opened the new refrigerator, âYou have this well stocked, pretty fancy foods.â
Raven moved to the side and peered past Ron into the new appliance in her kitchen. Her heart sank again. Josh had filled it with organic vegetables, fruits, cheeses, meats, condiments. He had neatly stacked and packed it full.
âI didnât know you started eating this high-quality stuff?â Ron asked.
âIâm trying to be a better foodie.â She turned away at this response. It was a lie, but what else could she say. âI need a shower.â There was no response. Raven walked upstairs and closed the bathroom door behind her.
The warm water calmed her, and the lavender soap soothed her conflicted feelings. She could not forget the pained look on Joshâs face, the red rose he left her, the card, and now a refrigerator stocked with food. That food was for us. It was for him to come over and cook meals for us. What have I done?
She dressed in a light floral sundress and her favorite white sandals. Ron was still sitting at the kitchen table, wearing only underwear and looking at his laptop. Raven said nothing and left the house.
The Galleria was close by. She could spend the day shopping and walking around away from Ron.
