Erin entered the coffee shop where she’d arranged to meet one Douglas Wong, PI, and spotted the blue wind breaker he said he’d be wearing. Dad had said he wanted to keep their little document leak problem within the family, but she just wanted it to be over. She was about to go to the counter to order her coffee, when she noticed Wong point to the cup sitting across from him. He’d chosen a table in a quiet corner.

“Your favourite latte,” he said to her as she pulled out the chair across from him.

She sipped it. Vanilla. Damn, he was right. “How did you know?”

“I did my research.”

“My social profiles are pretty locked down.”

“True, but not everyone close to you is as careful. A photo on Christina Bishop’s profile of you is public. According to what Ms. Bishop wrote, you’re holding your favourite vanilla latte.”

Impressive.

“Let’s get down to business. On the phone, you said you want me to find out if there’s a connection between,” he glanced down at his phone, “one of Vanessa Goldstein, Ryan Fothering, and Yvonne Smith, and either Hunt and Bishop or city council.”

She nodded. “Someone is leaking confidential documents. We—my father and I—used the emails to narrow down the point of origin to a library. Those three people were at the library both times an email was sent. But it’s possible someone else was on the library’s Wi-Fi.”

Wong raised his hand. “One thing at a time. Let me dig into this list first, and if they don’t pan out, we’ll figure out our next move.”

“My father can’t know about this.”

“You’re the client.”

She gulped down some latte. “We haven’t been able to find a connection between any of them and the company or city hall. I checked online too.”

“I’ll do it again.” Wong tapped something into his phone. “I’d like to do surveillance.”

“You mean watch them?”

“If they’re connected to someone you know, they could be making an effort to keep their connection offline. But to keep an eye on them 24/7 will require more manpower.”

“Whatever you need is fine.” Erin wanted to unmask White Knight ASAP. “This is a long shot, but can you also see if there’s a connection between any of them and Lily Altree. I don’t want Lily under surveillance,” she quickly added, not because she cared if Wong found out about their relationship, but because she wouldn’t invade Lily’s privacy like that. “But she’s the one who received the leaked documents through email.”

When Wong opened his mouth, Erin continued. “I know it wouldn’t make sense. Why wouldn’t they just hand the documents to her? But maybe someone doesn’t want her to know they’re the source for some reason.”

“I’ll check into it.”

“I’ll tell you up front you’ll find out she’s, uh, protested against Hunt and Bishop projects.”

“Which is why someone chose her to send the documents to.”

“Yes.” She’d told him so he wouldn’t call her up and say, “Guess what I found out? Lily Altree hates Hunt and Bishop and everything connected to it.
