Suitably stuffed with chicken tikka masala and pakora, Steph was getting sleepy. It had been a shitty day. But Gemma had made it bearable. Even if that did include watching The Proposal. At least Sandra Bullock was hot.

‘Are you only watching this for the scene when she’s nude?’ Steph joked.

‘No. It’s the impeccable script and the dazzling Betty White that does it for me,’ Gemma replied with a wink.

Steph really wanted to lie down and stretch out. The question was . . . was she brave enough to do it how she wanted? Why not be ballsy? She’d been through a lot today: she could write things off as a symptom of stress.

She grabbed a cushion and put it on Gemma’s lap, before resting her head and getting comfy. There were no protests. Friends provided friends with comfort, it was just what they did. Really, Steph craved being close to someone. It was days like today she really hated being single. The thought made her chest tighten so she stuffed it down, worried a repeat performance might be on the cards.

To her surprise, Gemma rested her hand at the base of Steph’s ribs, like it was the most natural thing in the world. Maybe it was to her.

‘Thanks again for today,’ Steph said quietly.

She almost jumped when Gemma’s other hand started to gently stroke her hair. There was nothing sexual about it; the move was one of pure comfort.

‘It was nothing. You okay now?’

‘Yeah.’

‘Want to talk about why it happened?’

‘I think work just got too much for me. It was like, I’d bottled things up for so long, if I wasn’t going to find a way to release how I felt, my body was going to do it for me.’

‘Bodies know best, no matter what we think. Has it happened before?’

‘Kind of, but not as bad. Only twice. Once when I was in the café with Maisie, just before I met you.’

‘I didn’t think you were right that day. We’ll get this sorted.’

They watched the movie in silence for a while, Gemma’s hand continuing to stroke Steph’s hair at sporadic intervals.

She’d never had a female friend like this. Plenty of friends over the years, but no one close. Not without them wanting something more.

She’d be a liar if she said she didn’t want more from Gemma, but she wasn’t a fool. Steph knew it wasn’t on the table. A friend was just as good. Even if it was only temporary. If things worked out with Izzy, Gemma would probably lose touch.

Maisie would be gone soon as well. Married life and inevitable children stealing her focus. Steph could really do without the wedding next weekend. She sighed.

‘What was that for?’

‘What?’

‘That massive sigh,’ Gemma replied with a chuckle.

‘Just thinking.’

‘Good or bad?’

She took a deep breath. ‘Things with Maisie, they didn’t exactly end well. And she stupidly was honest with Shannon.’

‘That’s her fiancée?’

‘Yep.’

‘Which has made things, well, complicated.’

‘Was there, how do I put this? An overlap?’

Steph smiled. ‘Not so much. More Maisie being brutally honest about our messy past and how I'm the love of her life.
