Chapter Eleven

I blinked at him, speechless as if he slapped me. This lich had a talent for throwing curve balls in conversation.

“Do you plan to search for a way to return to your world? While it is difficult, and I am displeased to confess that I have never mastered interplanar travel, it is not impossible. You could attempt to find a capable mage, though I have not heard of your realm before your mentions, which must mean the curious minds of this domain have not yet discovered it.” He moved his gaze to the stars again, tucking one arm under his skull. “But hypothetically speaking, do you wish to go back?”

“God, no.” I snorted a laugh as I turned on my side, propping my head on my knuckles.

“Even now that you know what I am, had some days to settle and think … there is nothing you will miss?”

I bit my lip, taking a moment to think on it but coming to the same conclusion as I had before.

“Not really. Perhaps a few conveniences of modern life. But I’m sure what I won’t miss: The Internet and social media. Imagine it as a village message board, but instead of just people walking by seeing it, the whole world can. I guess some folks on there are nice, but too many pollute the space with gloating or hateful messages.”

“That sounds like a grandiose waste of one’s time,” Yrvaeth concluded in his usual matter-of-fact tone.

“Oh, it is! The appeal was always lost on me. I used to cringe at people saying they were born in the wrong world or the wrong era.” I scoffed, the noise drifting into a sigh. “But I think with no way out, I was afraid of admitting that I felt the same. Now that I am here, now that I don’t have to bear it any longer, it’s easier to admit that I hated my life.”

“It is common to close one’s eyes to the truth when a glimpse of it would bring endless suffering with no hope of relief.”

I paused, snapping the fingers of my free hand resting on my hip. “Oh, video games, though. I’ll miss those.”

“What are those games you speak of?” His chin dipped in my direction, and I giggled.

I’d never brought up my love for games until now, fearing a scholar like him might judge my passion childish just as most people did in my realm, dismissing the art and amazing stories to be found within them. But over our time together, I had come to know him as being surprisingly open-minded, and so I decided to take the plunge and indulge his curiosity.

“They are, uh … imagine interactive books! But you see the scenes and moving images right in front of you like a play instead of in your mind, plus you control the main characters. Some games make you fight monsters and solve riddles or save the world. Some let you live a quiet life as a farmer or do sports. In some, you can drive cars or ride horses.
