What Are You Listening To?

Busy, busy, busy! I don’t have time for myself, and my friends won’t let me hear the last of it. School is a priority; work is a priority. Surely God can understand my schedule. I would like to spend more time in prayer and in Scripture, but every time I try my schedule whisks me away to another activity. At least I listen to worship music on the way to work. It’s something, right? —the girl with a lot on her plate

Hey girl,

You may be seeking God, but can you hear Him? Do you love His teaching, or are you just getting by? You are not serving Christ when you don’t seek Him with your whole heart.

God has not called us into passivity. Your walk with Him is purposed, and even in the high speed of everyday life, His Word is the perfect way to slow you down. Meditating on Scripture is a discipline we must learn. In becoming an active listener, you gain the ability to soak in all He has for you.

When all is in disarray, you cannot rely on your knowledge to get you through the day. The noise of the world may be loud, but if you give it your undivided attention, you won’t be nourished. Pay attention to what God has to say to you. When you tune out the world and tune into His voice, you can explore the facets of who He is and effectively navigate through life with Him by your side.

SCRIPTURE: “Blessed is the person who does not follow the advice of wicked people, take the path of sinners, or join the company of mockers. Rather, he delights in the teachings of the Lord and reflects on his teachings day and night. He is like a tree planted beside streams—a tree that produces fruit in season and whose leaves do not wither. He succeeds in everything he does.” (Ps. 1:1–4 GW)

DIG DEEPER: Psalm 25:4–5; Proverbs 2:1–5; John 10:27–28

PRAYER: Father, forgive me for rejecting Your voice. I have put worldly knowledge over my relationship with You as if You are not the source of all wisdom. I forget that I can go about my day with You in mind. Give me an ear to hear You. In Jesus’s name, amen.

KINGDOM KEY: When we are rooted in God’s Word, we flourish. The noise of the world won’t distract us from clearly hearing His voice.
