Jace has been attached to me since yesterday. He even went as far as sitting in the back of the SUV with me so he can hold my hand. His hand feels clammy, and he keeps chewing the inside of his mouth, giving away he’s anxious about meeting Harper. I want nothing more than to protect him from those feelings.

I turn to face him, slowly trailing my hand over his jawline. “Hey, it’s fine.”

His eyes lock with mine, and his Adam’s apple bobs. “I just want her to like me.”

My heart soars at his words.

I was scared of Jace blaming Harper for her conception. I thought his hate would cloud his judgment, but now, staring into his dark eyes, I know, without a shadow of a doubt, this man just wants to be loved by my little girl, and it’s then I fall deeper in love with him, something I thought was impossible until now.

“She’ll love you, Jace.”

“You think?” He searches my face for a trace of uncertainty. “You said she likes giraffes, right?”

I bite into my lip with a nod.

“Good.” The one-word answer leaves me confused, but I have no time to analyze it because the SUV pulls to a stop.

“Lucas is over there.” Cole points toward the gates to the zoo, and my pulse races with excitement as I try to get out of the car and join them. I fumble to open the door, and before my feet touch the ground, I hear her squeal in delight.

“Mommy!”

She runs toward me, and I meet her halfway, bending down to greet her. Harper’s hands wrap around my neck.

“I missed you.” I breathe into her hair as I squeeze her tightly.

“I missed you too, Mommy.” She pulls back to look at me. “Lucas says there are giraffes and crocodiles in the zoo, can we go see?”

Jace shadows me, and I stand. “Harper, this is Mommy’s friend, Jace. Can you say hi?”

Harper scrunches up her nose, scrutinizing Jace, who kneels down so he’s level with her.

I can see the nervousness rolling off him, the shake of his hand when he holds it out for Harper. “Nice to meet you, Harper.”

“You have pictures on you.” She ignores his hand and instead points to his neck.

Jace chuckles awkwardly and withdraws his hand. “Yeah, they’re tattoos.”

“I like ’em.” She grins at him.

“You do?” Shock mars his face, and I melt at the look of relief on him.

“Yeah. Can I choose one for you to paint on you?” Harper asks.

“Sure.” Jace chuckles back at Harper happily. The moment between them feels like a dream. I never thought I’d see him again, let alone with my daughter.

Cole’s hand bands around my waist and tugs me gently toward him. “I missed you, beauty.” He nuzzles into my neck, sending a surge of arousal through me.

My eyes drift to Lucas; he’s watching us with heavy eyes, and I fidget under his scrutiny.

“Harper wants to go see the crocodiles, are you guys joining us?” Jace chuckles playfully as he tugs Harper into his arms.
