Chapter Seven

Surprise

It was nearing midnight; almost two hours left before closing time. Sharon got one more drink and planned to sip on it until closing time.

Andy went back to washing glasses and waiting on customers; I was anxious for Richard to make an appearance so we could discuss crime in the streets of Los Gatos. I hope he was supposed to be patrolling the areas.

“Andy laid the plan out in detail. Now all they had to do is convince Richard to take a chance.”

Well,” Sharon said, “I hope he comes around soon. We need to have a real deep conversation, and if necessary, we might have to do a little arm twisting to get approval from Richard.”

It was 1:00 a.m. when Richard came bounding through the rear door. And as usual, he greeted Andy with a hearty hello and a question, “Who’s the beautiful young lady you are keeping up all night?” He had yet to meet Sharon. He was in for a delightful surprise.

“Oh, this is my girlfriend, Sharon. Sharon, this is Richard. He often escorts me part of the way home to make sure I get there safely. You still on duty? Sit down, and I’ll pour you a drink.”

“No, Andy, my job’s worth more than a little whiskey, but one of these days, when I’m out of my uniform, I’ll be glad to have a drink with you,” he declared.

“Well, that’s fair enough. I wouldn’t want to get you in trouble. Besides, we can have a drink anytime. If nothing else, you can drop by my place on your day off.”

Finally, it was one forty-five, and Andy announced to the patrons that they have to drink up because they have to clear the premises by two o’clock, and that was only fifteen minutes.

He rarely got complaints when it was the closing time; most of his customers knew the rules and the state law.

Richard spoke up at two o’clock, saying, “Well, Andy, you ready to go?”

“Can you spare ten minutes, Richard? Sharon and I have something would like to discuss with you. Let’s go over to the table and sit and relax for a few minutes. We won’t keep you very long.”

“Sure, why not,” Richard said. “What’s on your mind?” Richard seemed to be quite curious, at least enough to give up some of his precious time to listen to what the other two had to say.

“Well, Richard, it goes something like this. Do you remember the lady that was murdered in San Jose a short time ago—less than two years ago? Well, the woman that got killed was Sharon’s best friend. There used to be an old man that came in here almost, oh, three to four times a week. And he just happened to be the butler of the ex-boyfriend of the lady that was supposed to take the bullet, also another one of Sharon’s friends. Are you still with me so far?

“Not exactly. You lost me somewhere back in San Jose. After that, it was just mumbo-jumbo, but do continue.
