James

“Why Crush?”

“Because it’s a reminder that although things can weaken our spirit, there is always another connotation to the same word, the kindling of potential love.” Tom chuckled and shook his head. “I promise I’m not nuts. The word has always fascinated me with the meanings being such opposites.”

Rich gazed at James with a small smile. “I like it. What about you?”

He nodded. “I like the idea behind it. This place could do with new life, a new look and a new name. The next generation can keep it going,” he said quietly.

“We can keep it going with everything you made it into.” Tom’s voice was firm. “I will never stop this from being what you created.”

“I know.” James smiled. “It’s difficult when it has been part of our lives for so long.”

“I understand. One other thing I would say is that I will not be telling people I own this bar.”

“Why not?”

“Because I don’t want the people to see me differently. I want them to treat me as any other person. I’ve seen how people react when they know you own something like this. Money brings out the worst in people. I’d like to keep that off my plate, where possible.”

“Sounds like a good idea. So, the people who will work here will be introduced to you as the manager?”

“Yeah. The owner,” he used air quotes, “will be someone only in touch with me.”

“Fair enough.”
