A couple of hours later, at ten on the dot, Daniel walked in, rousing me from my assignment-induced sleep.

‘How was it? Did you like the new partner?’ I asked.

‘The jury’s still out. He’s a hot head under pressure. He’s been known to sack good people in the heat of the moment.’

‘You’re streetwise, Daniel,’ I said. ‘My money’s on you to outlast him.’

‘If I want to,’ he said, looking serious. ‘How was your night? Did the kids go to sleep easily?’

‘Yes, they did,’ I said, as I stood up and followed him into the kitchen. ‘You might be surprised to hear this, but I learnt a whole lot about Caitlin tonight. She didn’t talk, but I got her communicating with me.’

He put the kettle down and gave me his full attention. ‘How did you do that?’

‘I asked questions, then asked her to hit the piano keys to answer me. White for yes, and black for no.’

‘That’s very clever,’ he said, smiling at me in a way I really liked. ‘I really appreciate your help, April. Did you watch a movie?’

‘Well, I would have,’ I said, feeling bolder by the minute. ‘But there wasn’t anything on Foxtel, so I hope you don’t mind but I checked out your planner.’

‘That’s fine. Did you find anything?’ he asked as he put teabags in the tea cups.

‘Yes, but the only movies on your planner are password-protected, if you know what I mean.’

He looked at me through the Clark Kent glasses and laughed. ‘Oh, right. It’s been blue movie month on World Movies. I’ve got a few R-rated movies on there.’

‘You have several, actually. And I couldn’t watch any of them. I was very tempted to ring and ask for your password.’

‘You should’ve. Although, they’re usually not that good.’

‘What makes a good art-house blue movie?’ I asked, feeling very bold.

‘Same as any movie — characters you care about, good story, believable sex.’

‘Exactly. Not so easy to find.’

He changed the subject back to Caitlin after that, but something had changed. It felt warmer between us than it had before.
