Chapter Nine

@KeepingupwithKyle: My brother forced me to come to an adventure park and I swear I just saw a girl get pushed off a zip line. Is that even legal? I’m concerned. Do I report it? Pretty sure she screamed “fuck it, man” on the way down. This place is freaky. I wanna go home.

“Have you forgiven me yet?” Arden collapsed onto the cabin’s damp porch steps beside Rosie, offering out a steaming mug of what Rosie hoped was an Irish coffee. She still hadn’t recovered from the trauma of the zip line, and the shock made her bones jitter like wind chimes in a hurricane.

But she’d done it. That had to have counted for something, didn’t it? It felt like it did. Not that she wished to do it again any time soon, but maybe it was a step in the right direction. A step towards pushing down her fear of heights so that she could get on a plane again.

With a sigh, she sipped her drink, the bitter taste scalding her tongue. It was, in fact, an Irish coffee. “No,” she replied finally, though of course, it wasn’t the truth. Arden had only done as Rosie had asked. If she hadn’t, Rosie would probably never have made it out of that forsaken tree.

“I only did as you asked.” Arden elbowed Rosie in her ribs lightly, her eyes locked on the campfire flames. For whatever reason, Murray had decided he’d rather celebrate his birthday outside in the freezing night than in the nice warm cabin he and James must have paid a bomb for. Laughter and conversation hummed all around… it was a strange melody since Rosie hadn’t been around so many people for so long. It reminded her of home, of New Year’s Eve in the local pub. Rosie had spent this year’s curled up on her tatty couch alone, listening to the fireworks and cheers outside her window, but at least she was here now. In the end, it hadn’t been such a terrible first day of 2022 — minus the fact that she’d almost left behind half of her organs while coming down the zip line, that was.

“I know.” Rosie blew out a breath and found the strength to smirk. Maybe it was the healthy dose of whiskey in her drink, but the orange glow guttering across Arden’s face was mesmerising, and she couldn’t find it in her to look away.

As though sensing her attention, Arden turned and her eyes locked onto Rosie’s. They were murky and full of shadows in the darkness, but they sparkled with the same stars as the unpolluted air above.

“I think you did great, Rosie. I think you were really brave.”

Rosie scoffed, her face burning with the last remnants of shame. She’d been a snotty, blubbering mess, and not just in front of Arden, but in front of her cocky ex-husband too. She bowed her head, cringing at the memory. She wished she could wipe it away with an eraser, like chalk on a blackboard.
