Chapter 9

Bryn

I had a great deal to learn about parenting.

Somehow, foolish me, I had assumed that an exhausted child would sleep in the day after he’d been so utterly knackered as the Brits would say. It seems I was mistaken in that assumption. Liam climbed into bed—and over me—at roughly ten after five Sunday morning, citing that his pee tank had been full of pink ginger fuzzy drinks from his mommy’s wedding. Michael never moved when the child flopped down between us, mouth running at Mach 10. Either he was still out like a light, or he was faking. I leaned to faking.

“Is my mommy on the beach now?”

I rolled to my back, eyes glued shut, mouth coated with that vile film that champagne always leaves, and my own pee tank full to bursting.

“She’s probably asleep,” I croaked, rubbing at my eyes with my fingertips. “It’s quite early for a Sunday, Liam.”

He leaned up, resting his bony elbows on my chest, his green eyes wide. “Sunday is a day like any other. Mom said that one times when she had to work. Can we call her and see if she’s on the beach? I seen the ocean one time.” He held up a finger coated with chocolate. “It was as big as the world! And the sand had shells and long-leg birds. And alien crabs.”

“Alien crabs?” I asked as my brain attempted to kickstart itself.

“Why could Adam go to the beach with Mommy and not me?”

“Well, because they just got married.”

He mulled that over for a moment. “But Mommy said I was an important part of the new marriage too, and that Adam was marrying in for the family. So, if he married me too why did I have to stay home with you and Uncle Mike while they go to the beach?”

Dear Lord. It was too early for this. I nudged Michael in the side, but he never moved. Faking. Definitely faking. “When two people in love get married, they go on a honeymoon together, and that’s just for the two adults who were married.”

“What does the kids who are marrying in for the family get to do?” He picked at his nose. I gave him a raised eyebrow, and his hand fell back to my chest. A hand covered with chocolate.

“They get to stay with their favorite uncles for two weeks. Where did you get into chocolate?” I asked, slowly sitting up. The lad tipped to the side with a snorty little giggle, his bare feet sticking up into the air.

“I found some hidden in the table drawer in the living room.” I threw a glance at my husband. So his secret Snickers stash had been found. He’d not be happy about that. “Can we go to the zoo today?”

“Let’s do that tomorrow for a daytime trip just you and me. Today Uncle Mike and I need to rest a bit then we’re going to go look at a house.”

“You’re old.”

“I am, yes, ancient, like one of the Easter Island stone heads.
